Supporting Accessible Scheduling Software for Blind and Low-Vision Users

The Chicago Lighthouse and UI Health worked with Epic to optimize screen reader integration, enabling users who are blind or have low vision to schedule appointments for patients.
The University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UI Health) employs several dozen individuals who are blind or have low vision through the Chicago Lighthouse, an organization that provides vision rehabilitation services, education, employment opportunities, and assistive technology. When UI Health chose to implement Epic in 2018, the health system set a goal to make the entirety of the scheduling workflow accessible to blind and low-vision employees in the call center—something that was not possible with its previous scheduling software.
