Sharing Science Through Stories

New University of Wisconsin course helps researchers communicate findings

Researchers working on the next big scientific breakthrough often want to get others excited about their findings, but might struggle to communicate them outside of the lab. A new science communication course at UW-Madison uses storytelling techniques to help graduate students and postdoctoral researchers create compelling presentations, posters, and “elevator stories” about their work.
Course faculty Holly Walter Kerby and Adam Steinberg say that storytelling is an underrepresented but key skill for scientists. Storytelling, says Kerby, “is about having something really cool you want to share with your audience, and then putting it in a context where that’s valuable and unknown. And then people go with you to find it out.”
