After switching to Epic’s pre-surgical workflows, UPMC Central Pa. nearly doubled scheduling capability, saving $300,500 in salary expenses and administrative costs and realizing an additional $5.85 million in on-time revenue.
When UPMC Central Pa. launched Epic, leaders saw an opportunity to transition away from their old process of using faxes for surgical case requests, documentation, and scheduling. By switching to an electronic pre-surgical workflow and eliminating 66,000 faxes annually, UPMC Central Pa. reduced day-of-surgery cancellations from 2.7% to 1.3%. This switch saved the health system $300,500 in salary expenses and administrative costs and helped them realize an additional $5.85 million in on-time revenue.
