Remote Monitoring Decreases High Glucose Occurrence by 39%

A virtual glucose management service (vGMS) at UC San Francisco allows diabetes specialists to assess the insulin needs of hospitalized diabetic patients remotely, without a face-to-face assessment of each patient. Instead, specialists review daily reports in Epic to determine appropriate insulin doses, and they add their assessments to patients’ records for other clinicians to review and act on.

In a study that was published in the March 2017 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, UCSF researchers found that vGMS has led to a 39% decrease in the number of patients on the high-glucose report on any given day. The study’s lead author, Dr. Robert Rushakoff, notes that it would take a diabetes specialist an entire day to formally consult with and assess all diabetes patients. With the virtual monitoring, specialists can receive all the information they need, complete their assessments, and send them to responsible clinicians in less than an hour.
