Reducing Sepsis Mortality by One-Fifth with Epic

Lee Health in Fort Myers, Florida, reduced mortality by 20% since 2015 by identifying and treating patients in the early stages of sepsis sooner. Research shows that with each hour patients with sepsis don’t receive treatment, their risk of dying increases by 4%, so early detection is critical.
A predictive model in Epic helps clinicians at Lee Health identify patterns that indicate adult patients in the early stages of sepsis. When a patient meets certain criteria, clinicians receive a notification that gives them the option to order a sepsis treatment protocol. Then they use a detailed checklist to track and complete treatment.
