Patients’ Records Go with Them Aboard USNS Comfort

April 28, 2020
Navy, Pentagon, NYC Health + Hospitals, and Epic work together to equip the facility with patients’ records

On March 28th, the USNS Comfort docked in New York Harbor, sent from its home port in Virginia to care for patients with milder cases of COVID-19 and make room in New York City’s intensive care units. The ship is used to provide medical care during times of critical need, such as natural disasters, in the United States and abroad.

A few weeks later, the ship was equipped with donated Epic software to help clinicians better understand each patient’s medical history. This project was at the request of a Logistics Coordinator from USNS Comfort, in collaboration with NYC Health + Hospitals. With the Care Everywhere interoperability network, clinicians on the ship have a patient’s relevant medical information when the patient arrives.
