On-Demand Virtual Care Offers Patients Convenience and Value

At UC Davis Health, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and The Queen’s Health System, on-demand virtual visits increase convenience and access to care for patients, prevent unnecessary ED and urgent care visits, save patients time and money, and relieve overburdened urgent care clinics and doctors’ offices.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a surge in demand for virtual care options. It’s easy to understand why: telemedicine is convenient for patients, and it can increase access to care, especially if patients live far from a provider.

UC Davis Health, the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), and The Queen’s Health System initially provided on-demand virtual care options for their patients in response to COVID-19 and then found these options to be popular after pandemic demand subsided. These three organizations collaborated on their virtual care implementations, and each refined its approach for its distinct patient populations.

How They Did It:

  • Offered virtual urgent care during days, evenings, and weekends, staffed by physicians and NPs
  • Minimized patient wait time with flexible staffing based on demand
  • Built on patients’ familiarity with MyChart to offer on-demand virtual visits
