MyChart Helps Health Systems Meet Access Needs for Disabled Patients

With a new questionnaire, patients in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) can inform their care providers when they need accommodations.
A new questionnaire in ACT’s Digital Health Record (Epic) and MyDHR (MyChart) allows people to voluntarily identify as having a disability and to record and update their access needs so Canberra Health Services staff can make accommodations when caring for them.
“This is a significant step toward a more inclusive health system, one that listens to people with disability and acts on what they have told us,” Rachel Stephen-Smith, Minister for Health of ACT, said. “Asking whether a person identifies as having a disability, and understanding their access needs, is essential to delivering truly person-centred care.”
Disability advocates say the change will improve safety, accessibility, and tailored care—particularly in acute settings—while building better data on the needs of people with disabilities to inform system-wide improvements.
