Epic Innovations: Mission Control for Patient Care at Nemours

The tactical logistics center at Nemours Children’s Hospital looks a lot like Mission Control. But instead of monitoring astronauts or spaceships, it monitors patients.

EMTs keep an eye on patients throughout the hospital using Epic Monitor. At the first sign of trouble, an alert is sent to the EMTs who coordinate interventions.

“The ability to intervene in that moment is critical. When you look back at those moments and often think, you know, if we only had someone who could’ve been there right at the moment—well this is that,” says David West, MD, medical director of health informatics at Nemours.
