Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital implements bi-directional integration with infusion pumps

Two-way integration reduces documentation workload for clinicians while improving patient safety.
Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital (ETZ) has become the second hospital in Europe to implement fully automated bidirectional infusion pump integration in its ICU. Medication changes made in the Epic electronic patient record (EPR) will automatically update the infusion pump—significantly reducing manual documentation for clinicians.
This marks a major step forward in closed-loop medication management. ETZ expects the system to reduce administrative burden and lower the risk of medication errors, particularly in the high-acuity ICU environment.
In implementing this integration, ETZ collaborated with the Inselspital University Hospital of Bern. “They did a lot of groundwork, and we were able to benefit from this,” an ETZ spokesperson said. ETZ plans to expand the technology across all departments.
