Duke’s Transplant Program Is One of the Nation’s Best

According to transplant data from 2016, the Duke Transplant Center performs the most successful adult liver transplants from in the nation. Duke performed 98 liver transplants last year—the most in North Carolina—and moved their patients off the waiting list more than 2.5 times faster than the national average. They also have the best post-transplant 1-year and 3-year survival rates.

Duke’s transplant success isn’t limited to liver transplants. At Duke, patients awaiting a lung transplant have a wait that’s almost nine times shorter than the national average, and intestinal transplant patients have a 100% 1-year survival rate, compared to the national average of 65-70%. Duke’s heart and kidney transplant programs are also consistently more successful and have shorter wait times than the national average, and Duke is one of only a few transplant centers to offer hand transplants.

Duke’s clinical success with transplant is in part due to their effective use of the reporting tools available through Phoenix, Epic’s transplant application. Among other things, Duke has used Phoenix’s reporting to assess referral patterns, track rejection episodes, and shape decision support for pre-transplant workflows.
