Partners HealthCare System becomes the first to integrate Epic and the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool

Epic community members across the country are helping clinicians combat the opioid epidemic by integrating prescription drug monitoring programs with Epic, making it easier and faster for clinicians to see patients’ prescriptions from other organizations. Now, Partners HealthCare System has become the first healthcare organization in Massachusetts to integrate information from the state’s prescription drug monitoring program, the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool, with the patient’s chart in Epic.

By integrating the MassPAT database with Epic, Partners makes it possible for clinicians to see a patient’s controlled substance prescriptions directly in the patient’s chart instead of logging in to the database separately, saving clinicians time.

“We’re arming our providers with more robust, point-of-care access to the state’s prescription drug monitoring program to support safe and responsible treatment of pain,” said Thomas Sequist, chief quality and safety officer at Partners.
