Ochsner Health System uses Epic’s mobile apps to engage patients from admission to discharge - and beyond

Ochsner Health System uses Epic’s Haiku, Canto, MyChart, MyChart Bedside, and Rover mobile apps on Apple products to engage patients with providers from admission to discharge—and beyond.

Ochsner has long been on the forefront of using mobile technology in care delivery. They were the first organization to integrate Epic with Apple’s HealthKit, a framework that allows health apps and devices to send data to a central iOS hub called Health®, which can then send data to Epic through MyChart.

This integration is the basis for Ochsner’s population health programs, which monitor patients with chronic conditions even after they leave the hospital or clinic. In the Hypertension Digital Medicine Program, patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure take several blood pressure readings each week using a HealthKit-enabled blood pressure cuff. The readings are sent to providers in Epic, who can follow up on abnormal values. Ochsner’s hypertension control rate at 90 days is 86%, compared to the U.S. average of 52%.
