Using decision support tools and barcode scanning in Epic, physicians at UCLA Health can make sure they order blood transfusions only when patients really need them. When physicians order blood, the patient’s hemoglobin level appears in Epic, helping the physician decide whether the patient is a good match for a blood transfusion. Blood transfusions pose risks to patients, so showing physicians this decision support information exactly when they need it helps keep patients safe.
