Hospitals Find Innovative Ways to Relax Pediatric Patients

Distractions improve patient experience and care

The whirlwind of surgeries, medicines, and machines can be scary for kids in the hospital. Pediatric hospitals have come up with a variety of anxiety-reducing techniques. Clinicians dress up as superheroes, volunteers read books, and, recently, providers at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital created Bedside Entertainment Theaters (BERTs). Originally developed by a pediatric anesthesiologist in his garage, BERTs project cartoons and videos onto a large screen, for a full immersive experience before a patient enters surgery.
