The “Good Virus” in Your Gut

A lesson in digestion

We all know that bacteria live in our guts, but it turns out that there are also viruses in there that improve digestion. And where do those viruses live? Inside of gut bacteria. These special viruses, called bacteriophages, can multiply quickly to take over and kill bacteria. While scientists have known about bacteriophages for some time, it’s only recently that they’ve started paying attention to what they do in the body. Bacteriophages might be thought of as tiny bouncers who decide which bacteria are permitted to party in your gut.
