Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System Rapidly Accelerate Research Capabilities

Yale improved their turnaround time on research requests for data from over 6 months to less than 1 month. At the same time, the number or research requests grew by around 500%.
Innovative use of Epic’s MyChart Patient Portal has improved their communication and patient recruitment. In the last year, without any advertising, they had nearly 800 patients create research volunteer profiles online. Patients also use MyChart to enter patient-reported outcomes, with answers immediately available in the chart for clinical care and research.
Yale uses Epic as their enterprise EMR and revenue cycle system, having replaced Cerner, Eclipsys, Meditech, and GE with one consolidated platform. Since their go-live, unbilled clinical trials claims decreased dramatically – from $11 million to now consistently under $200K.
Looking to the future, Yale plans to leverage Epic’s telehealth capabilities for some of their research efforts such as remote consent visits, SlicerDicer for research feasibility queries, and Direct-to-Patient recruitment through MyChart.
