Rapid Transformation to Treat COVID-19 in the Middle East

Epic community members in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon quickly installed new features and workflows to respond to the pandemic

In the Middle East, the American University of Beirut Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare successfully implemented Epic features on accelerated timelines to help address COVID-19 by improving testing access and follow-up care in their communities.

  • Evaluating COVID-19 data trends with dashboards. The American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon installed Epic’s COVID-19 dashboard, which helped them to improve their screening workflows and increase their overall screening rate, switching from travel-based screening to full symptom checking that accounts for community spread.
  • Reducing contact and improving hospital capacity with video visits. AUB quickly began using video visits in MyChart for most specialties and in their ED to reduce the number of in-person ED visits and reduce contact for in-person ED visits. Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare in Saudi Arabia implemented MyChart video visits for primary care and psychiatric services.
  • Using infection control tools. AUB and JHAH began using infection control tools in Epic to notify clinicians in real-time about COVID-19 test results. JHAH also implemented MyChart Care Companion in one week, allowing patients with mild cases of COVID-19 to stay connected with their providers through daily symptom checks while they’re isolating at home.
