Doctors making house calls could be coming to a home near you

In 1950, nearly half of all doctors’ visits in America were house calls – today, it’s rare to find a doctor who does them. But this is changing. House calls for the chronically ill and elderly are easier and safer for patients. Along with mobilized equipment, new technology to identify patients who would benefit most from house calls makes this comeback feasible. The benefits are evident in the results of Independence at Home, an experiment in which CMS partnered with 15 medical practices to launch a house calls program for the patients needing it most—saving $35 million in its first two years.
