From Phone Tag to Push Notifications: How Four Health Systems Closed the Loop on Critical Lab Communication

Four health systems are among those that have replaced phone calls for critical lab result communication with Epic push notifications, achieving acknowledgement times under one minute—compared to an average of seven to twelve minutes previously. Lab staff save approximately ten minutes per result, which adds up to enough time saved at one organization for 15 full-time staff members to focus on higher-value work. Clinicians acted faster on critical results, where every minute matters.

Providing Pain Relief for Sickle Cell Crises Faster with Personal, Portable Care Plans

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust developed a digital sickle cell care program to improve tracking and transparency of emergency pain management. The program includes personalized emergency care plans and an ED order set. Patients went from having no digital care plans to 89% coverage, and active patient portal usage among people with sickle cell disease increased from 43% to 58%.

To provide expert overnight critical care, Kaiser Permanente Northern California implemented a telecritical care program that connects remote intensivists and nurses to ICUs through real-time monitoring, camera feeds, and instant communication. Today, the program is in use across 18 ICUs and is associated with a 7% reduction in adjusted mortality.
