More elderly Americans are homebound than in nursing homes, and those who are homebound are sicker. “Almost two million people over age 65, or nearly 6 percent of those Americans (excluding nursing home residents), rarely or never leave their homes, researchers recently reported in JAMA Internal Medicine. The homebound far outnumber the 1.4 million residents of nursing homes,” reports the New York Times. Researchers were surprised to find that homebound adults end up being sicker. Recognizing the issues that this group face, allows caregivers to use home care devices and services to bolster their support network at home.
