Children’s of Atlanta Decreases Appendicitis Readmissions 75%
This achievement helped CHOA become the first hospital in Georgia to reach HIMSS Stage 7

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has been awarded HIMSS Stage 7 for their work to improve patient care and outcomes using their EHR.

As a pediatric organization, CHOA performs more than 1,100 appendectomies per year. To limit radiation exposure from CT scans, they built an alert based on each patient’s Pediatric Appendicitis Score (PAS) to see whether they could use an ultrasound to detect appendicitis instead. By increasing physicians’ usage of PAS and using structured documentation in Epic, CHOA saw:

  • A 40% reduction in the number of CT scans performed on patients with appendicitis symptoms.
  • A 75% drop in the readmission rate of appendicitis patients—from 4% to about 1%.
