Joshua Neally’s car drove him 20 miles to the hospital after he experienced a pulmonary embolism, possibly saving his life. The car, Tesla’s Model X, has an “autopilot” control that allows the car to drive itself along stretches of freeway—and it ultimately managed to drive Joshua to a hospital just off the highway, where he was able to park it and check himself in to the emergency department.

While the debate has begun over the potential impact of self-driving cars on roadway safety, cars like Joshua’s are a testament to the fact that smarter cars may well hold a place in our future.
